We’re discussing the 5 W’s about my Supernatural Superheroes today: Who, what, when, where, and how about how these characters came to life on the page.
Thanks for joining me on my blog today to celebrate the release of my new urban fantasy novel, Hunters’ Watch Brigade: The Game.
So, why write urban fantasy/paranormal romance you ask? Why not write something more intellectual, historical, or say, a memoir?
Listen, I get plenty of real life in my real life. All I have to do is read the news, watch prime time T.V., or surf the internet and I get plenty of that. I write fantasy and romance for escape, for the pure delight of entertainment, and to get away and find respite from the “real world”.
Besides, fiction is therapy, for both reader and writer.
The sky’s the limit. I’ve outlined about fifteen different classes of characters I intend to explore. Demi-gods, vampires, werewolves, fairies, ghosts, angels, gargoyles, gods and goddesses, elves, witches, wizards, wolf shifters, cat shifters, other shifters, sentient dragons, and maybe even a leprechaun.
Just imagine the stories I could write with all these classes. Put them together in a room with different priorities, and the action is on, baby.
Well, they all have their own motivations, wounds, fears, and talents but I imagine they want the exact same thing we all want: to fit in. Yep, they’re pretty much like us, I suspect. They share our same basic needs for food, shelter, love, community, a place to call home, and a chance to develop into their best selves.
It’s through the fulfillment of those basic needs that we develop their character arcs, their stories. And what matters most in stories is the character’s relationship arcs.
Two hundred years ago Shade Vermillion’s wound was branded into his heart. A vampire turned him in a surprise attack and added Shade to his coven. Rather than stay, Shade left that coven and went out on his own, uttering a vow that he’d get back at that vampire for stealing his world from him.
He did something with his life. He found others like him and formed a rag-tag band of supernatural mercenaries. They call themselves the Hunters’ Watch Brigade.
Fast-forward two hundred years later to our present time and Shade’s organization has seriously grown. My supernaturals are no longer monsters for hire – now they do their work for the love of the game. They have divisions stationed throughout the world, but a common ideal unites them.
I stationed HWB headquarters in New York City. However, their adventures take them all over the globe. Don’t be surprised to find the Hunters’ Watch in your neck of the woods. Supernatural adventures can happen anywhere.
Their mission statement is simple: Whenever supernatural creatures like vampires, werewolves, or even innocent looking fairies go rogue and endanger human lives, the Hunters’ Watch Brigade steps in and stops them.

The Game is Book #2 in the series.
A demigod’s work is never done…
All monster hunter Samantha Silverton wants is a little R&R. She and her sexy partner, cat shifter Max, have a week off in the city that never sleeps, and she intends to enjoy it. But before she can unpack her suitcase, she’s caught up in the middle of a wicked game—a smartphone app driven scavenger hunt that’s bringing all the big, bad Supernaturals to NYC to play.
The bad part? The game was the brainchild of Alex Van Dam—Sam’s first love. What’s worse? She has to play alone.
Maximillion Ra hasn’t quite got a handle on his unique shifter magic yet. He’s in love with Sam, but if he’s ever going to be any good to her, he has to face his family’s curse. But how can he leave Sam now, especially with her old flame in the picture?
Alex Van Dam isn’t interested in who wins his game. He just wants to find the final prize—an ancient Greek relic. Once he has it, he’ll use the artifact’s magic to control all the Supernaturals in Manhattan, starting with the Hunters’ Watch Brigade.
Only Sam stands in his way. And without Max by her side, even the monster hunting daughter of Poseidon has to wonder if she stands a chance…
